10/12/2021 - Air Conditioning
Still wondering whether or not to install air conditioning in your home? Here’s why air conditioning is important and how it can truly benefit your lifestyle.
Health and wellbeing
In order to survive, our bodies need three things. Clean water, nourishing food and good quality air to breath.
It also helps if we can keep our bodies at a comfortable temperature. A healthy adult human body has inbuilt mechanisms to keep our internal organs and our brains at a safe working temperature. On hot days, we sweat to cool ourselves and on cold days, we shiver. However, those automatic responses will use up energy reserves. And, in the case of sweating, can contribute to dehydration.
When our bodies are neither too hot, nor too cold most of the calories we consume can be used to fuel our brains, our muscles, our respiratory system and our digestion. In other words, our biological machinery runs more smoothly and we feel better.
Think how you feel when you get too hot. For most of us it’s weary, tired, foggy brained, grumpy, unenthusiastic.
Now think how you feel when you are too cold for prolonged periods of time. Possibly sluggish, unable to concentrate, unwilling to move much, unsociable, lacklustre and indifferent?
A nice, comfortable body temperature helps you to concentrate, to figure out problems, communicate and to enjoy life. That’s just one reason why air conditioning is important.
Air conditioning is important for more vulnerable family members
A normal, healthy adult has no problem regulating their internal body temperature. OK so in extreme conditions, we may feel uncomfortable and we’ll be less productive, but that shouldn’t be a danger to life. For some members of society though, that’s not the case.
Very young babies, old folk, and people who are unwell can run into difficulty when the air temperature around them is either too hot or too cold. In some cases, the results can be tragic. Air conditioning is important for these people. It not only helps regulate their body temperature, it can also ensure that they are breathing clean air.
Sleep quality
Getting a good night’s sleep is so important to our overall health. When we are sleep deprived its hard to make sensible decisions, our reactions become slower and everyday tasks like driving a car or operating machinery become quite hazardous. Mood is affected by a lack of sleep - at least mine is - I can become quite intolerant when I’m tired and at times I’ll also feel anxious or depressed.
So what can be done? Well, having the right temperature in your bedroom is a big help. Air conditioning not only keeps the room at your chosen temperature, It also means that you can close the window and shut out any noise from outside the home.
Installing an air conditioning system with air filters also ensures that you are breathing good quality air, with fewer mould spores or pollutants that could irritate your respiratory system or your skin.
Of course an air conditioner can’t solve all of life’s problems. But hopefully, after a good night’s sleep you’ll feel better able to tackle them in the morning.
Can an air conditioner be useful when working at home?
Working from home has become the new normal for many of us. And that in itself brings both opportunities and challenges. On the plus side, the commute to work takes moments instead of hours, the decor is always to your taste and there are no arguments about the contents of the communal biscuit tin. You can wear your favourite fluffy socks to work too - with sandals if you want to.
On the other hand, working from home means that you are using your home heating system all day long which potentially impacts upon your energy bills….and on the environment. What you need is a really energy efficient system that only costs pence per day to run and can be installed so that it only You may be unlucky to find yourself in the box room where your computer, printer, lights and brain are whirring away and making the room feel stuffy and uncomfortable.
This is another area where air conditioning is important. Air conditioning was originally created with the efficiency of machinery in mind. Of course very few of us will have a main frame computer or even a server in our home office and so domestic air conditioning is perhaps less relevant from that perspective. But what we do have in our home office - is ourselves.
Controlling temperature and humidity and keeping fresh air flowing through your office has been shown to increase productivity and reduce illness. Modern air conditioning units are incredibly discreet. They are small, quiet and easy to operate. So, for a relatively small investment, you can make working from home much less onerous.
Air conditioning for pets
Finally, I want to talk about why air conditioning is important for our best friends - our house pets. Dogs and cats are very good at finding the most comfortable place in the house. But what if there is no comfortable place for them? What if the summer temperatures are so swelteringly hot that they become ill? Heat stroke in dogs is a life threatening condition and if you have ever been unfortunate enough to see a beloved pet affected by it - you will never ever want to repeat the experience.
It’s hard to keep dogs cool. There are few tricks you can try. You can use cooling mats and cooling jackets for them while you are at home. Let them lie in a shady part of the garden and set them up a paddling pool. But that’s not possible if you’re not there.
If you have to leave your dogs home alone on hot days, ask a neighbour to look in on them from time to time OR put on the air conditioning to keep them nice and cool. Don’t forget to leave them plenty of water too and draw the curtains to stop the sun coming in the windows and heating the room even more.
